To Our Members
Elevating the profile of Canadian dermatologists as experts and leaders in skin health.
This year marked a historic milestone for the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) as we celebrated our 100th anniversary. Throughout the year, we engaged members and commemorated this achievement in meaningful ways, culminating at our 100th Annual Conference in Halifax this past June. The event brought together the largest delegation in our history and served as a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of our community. Through commemorative exhibits, a time capsule, a founding story installation, and a special anniversary celebration, we honoured a century of progress while delivering an outstanding scientific program featuring valuable clinical updates, expert insights, and continued learning across the full spectrum of dermatology.
The capstone of our centennial year is Beneath the Skin, our commemorative publication produced in collaboration with Chronicle Companies. As our final official anniversary initiative, it celebrates the people, achievements, and impact of our community. Through personal reflections and stories from colleagues across Canada, it highlights our collective efforts to advance equitable access to dermatologic care, shape meaningful health policy, and strengthen medical education and lifelong learning. Just as importantly, it looks ahead, serving as both a tribute to the past 100 years and a statement of intent for the century to come.
As we enter our second century, advocacy remains one of our highest priorities. Building on strong momentum from previous years, the CDA made significant progress at the national, provincial, and international levels. This included participation in the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) World Skin Summit in Cape Town, where global leaders gathered to address the shared goal of making treatment accessible and affordable worldwide. With the World Health Organization’s recent resolution recognizing skin diseases as a public health priority and expanding the list of essential dermatologic medications, the importance of CDA’s presence in these global conversations has never been greater. While our primary sphere of influence is national, we recognize that healthcare delivery in Canada is largely provincial. Strengthening collaboration with provincial dermatology associations has therefore been a key focus. This year, we established bi-monthly national and provincial association meetings, creating a consistent forum to share insights, align priorities, and coordinate advocacy efforts. This collaborative approach has allowed the CDA to support provincial partners effectively, including issuing a public statement in support of l’Association des médecins dermatologues du Québec regarding concerns with Bill 2.
Guided by our advocacy platform, we advanced our understanding of Canada’s dermatologist workforce shortage and the solutions required to address it. Our report, More Than Skin Deep: Solutions to Narrow Canada’s Dermatology Gap, outlines clear, dermatologist-endorsed recommendations to improve access to care. One of the solutions is technology integration. On this front, our AI working group developed a CDA position statement, which was endorsed by the advocacy and Stakeholder committee and the board. It will guide our actions going forward as we integrate AI into the practice of dermatology. To further support our membership on this journey, we hosted an AI webinar and developed a collaboration with Heidi Health, providing complimentary trial access to AI-powered clinical documentation tools designed to help reduce administrative burden in practice.
In November 2025, the CDA brought its advocacy directly to Parliament Hill for the first time, engaging with parliamentarians and senior public servants to highlight the urgent need for a stronger dermatology workforce and improved patient access to timely, specialized care. Building on this success, we returned six months later with expanded participation and impact. Dermatology was prominently represented through direct public engagement on Parliament Hill, including a public skin cancer screening clinic and a private screening for Members of Parliament and Senators, delivered in collaboration with Melanoma Canada’s Mole Mobile program. We recognize that influencing public policy is a long-term effort requiring consistent messaging and broad public support. We are proud that more than 5,000 individuals have already added their voices to our dermatology petition. We extend our sincere thanks to our partners and members who helped amplify this important initiative and raise awareness among patients and communities.
From a governance perspective, the board remained focused on its core fiduciary responsibilities. This included evaluating the 2023–2025 strategic plan, adopting a comprehensive risk management framework, maintaining a strong financial position, and refining key performance indicators to guide our progress. Equally important was ensuring that the voice of our membership continues to shape our direction. To that end, the president hosted three town hall meetings, providing an open forum for meaningful dialogue on the issues that matter most to our members. Regarding membership, our 2025 renewal rate remained strong at 91%.
In closing, we extend our deepest gratitude to our members, who generously contribute their time and expertise through board and committee service, and to our dedicated staff, whose commitment enables us to advance our mission every day. Together, we continue to strengthen and unite the dermatology community across Canada.
It has been an honour and a privilege to serve you and work alongside you.

In 2025, the CDA marked a historic milestone, 100 years of advancing dermatology in Canada. This centennial year brought members together to reflect on our past, engage in the present, and help shape the future of dermatology.
Through a blend of immersive in-person experiences and dynamic digital content, members across the country had the opportunity to celebrate, contribute, and be part of this historic moment.
At the 100th Annual Conference in Halifax, the centennial experience came to life through an immersive journey spanning past, present, and future.
Members explored the origins and evolution of the CDA through archival displays, historical imagery, a 100-year history video, and an interactive digital timeline highlighting key milestones in Canadian dermatology.
The present-day experience highlighted the strength and priorities of today’s dermatology community through interactive activations, including a member time capsule, an advocacy installation, and a digital mosaic wall capturing the faces and voices of the CDA in its centennial year.
Looking ahead, members contributed reflections and future predictions for dermatology through a dedicated video booth experience, creating a lasting archive for future generations.
To ensure broad engagement and lasting impact, the centennial campaign lived far beyond the conference through a suite of digital experiences:
As part of the celebration, the CDA published Beneath the Skin, a commemorative publication developed in partnership with Chronicle Companies that reflects on the people, progress, and future of dermatology in Canada.
Advocacy is at the core of the CDA’s mission to advance dermatology and improve access to care for Canadians. Through government relations, public awareness, and strategic partnerships, we work to elevate the voice of dermatologists and the patients they serve.
Together with members and stakeholders, we are driving conversations that shape the future of skin health in Canada. Our efforts focus on creating meaningful change for both the profession and the public.
Advocacy is a core strategic pillar of the Canadian Dermatology Association. The CDA is committed to positioning dermatologists as Canada’s foremost experts in skin health and to ensuring that commitment is reflected in the policies, investments, and conversations that shape the future of the profession. This work is guided by three objectives:
Build and market an ownable advocacy platform that includes information about the profession, dermatological success stories, and professional challenges and solutions.
Build the reputation of dermatologists by showcasing expertise and impact on patients.
Build the reputation of the CDA by engaging in key topics at high-profile tables and developing national and provincial relationships.
In November 2025, the CDA brought its advocacy platform, More Than Skin Deep, directly to Parliament Hill for the first time. CDA representatives met with parliamentarians and senior civil servants to make the case for a stronger dermatologist workforce and improved patient access to timely, specialized skin care. It was a significant milestone and an important foundation for the expanded engagement that followed.
The CDA established the Task Force on Dermatology Credentials to address the growing presence of non-certified practitioners operating dermatology-focused consultative practices across Canada, with a comparative analysis of training programs planned for later this year.
The CDA submitted its 2027–2028 Pre-Budget Submission to the Ministry of Finance, adding new AI and health-technology recommendations aligned with the government’s investment priorities.
The CDA is grateful to its members for their continued engagement in this important work.
The CDA now convenes National and Provincial Dermatology Association meetings every two months, an increase from the previous annual cadence. These meetings give provincial associations a regular forum to share updates, compare experiences, and coordinate on issues of national relevance.
One of the most consistent themes that has emerged is that many challenges felt acutely at the provincial level are, in fact, shared across the country. That recognition has strengthened both the relationships between associations and the CDA’s ability to advance a cohesive national position.
In response to the Government of Quebec’s adoption of Bill 2, the CDA issued a press release in support of the Association des médecins dermatologues du Québec, expressing the Association’s concerns about the legislation’s implications for dermatology practice in the province.
When the government of Manitoba signalled its intention to eliminate the province’s dermatology residency training program, the CDA provided research support to Doctors Manitoba and the Winnipeg Dermatological Society in their efforts to preserve it. The collaboration leveraged national resources to address a provincial challenge, demonstrating the type of coordinated response that benefits both the profession and future patients.
The CDA is committed to protecting the skin health of Canadians through trusted guidance, public education, and evidence-based programs. Our initiatives help Canadians make informed decisions while promoting prevention and early intervention.
Led by dermatologist expertise, these programs reinforce public confidence in skin health information and recognized products. Together, they support healthier outcomes and greater awareness nationwide.
In 2025, the CDA undertook its biennial review of the Sun Protection and Skin Health Program criteria. This rigorous process, conducted every two years, ensures that both programs’ testing requirements and ingredient standards remain aligned with evolving industry practices and the latest clinical research. The review is led by CDA Certified Dermatologists serving on the advisory boards, reinforcing the scientific integrity and credibility of both programs.
As a result of the 2025 review, enhanced testing requirements were introduced to the Sun Protection Program, alongside updates to the prohibited ingredients list within the Skin Health Program. These changes further strengthen the programs’ scientific standards and bring them into closer alignment with leading European benchmarks.

The CDA is proud to recognize Dr. Ian Landells as the outgoing chair of the Recognized Skin Health Program (SHP) Advisory Board. Dr. Landells first proposed the creation of the program in 2011-12, building on the success of the CDA’s Sun Protection Program (SPP), established in 1989, and played a pivotal role in shaping its scientific framework and supporting its sustained growth.
Since its inception, the program has grown from no recognized products to 191 under his leadership. According to a 2023 Ipsos Reid poll, the program is recognized by nearly 50% of Canadians, reinforcing its impact as a trusted national resource for skin health guidance.
Dr. Landells will continue to serve as a valued member of the advisory board, with leadership transitioning to Dr. Sandy Skotnicki as the incoming Chair. The CDA extends its sincere appreciation for his vision, leadership, and lasting contribution to the program’s success.
The CDA launched a national public education video series featuring members addressing key topics in skin, hair, and nail health. Designed to combat misinformation and improve access to credible dermatologic information, the series provides clear, evidence-based guidance while addressing common myths and misconceptions seen across digital and social media platforms. Content was developed for broad public reach, with both long-form educational videos and short-form clips adapted for social and digital distribution to increase accessibility and engagement across audiences.
The May 2026 Sun Awareness Month campaign focused on sun safety, skin cancer prevention, and changing perceptions about tanning behaviours among Gen Z audiences.
Through coordinated digital storytelling, media outreach, educational resources, and dermatologist and Gen Z led content, the campaign promoted prevention-focused behaviours while reinforcing the importance of early detection and daily sun protection.
With skin cancer rates continuing to rise and access to dermatology care remaining limited in many regions, prevention continues to play a critical role in reducing long-term risk.
While most young Canadians understand the risks of UV exposure, new national data from Ipsos on behalf of the CDA shows that nearly 4 in 10 Gen Z still intentionally tan.
Sun Awareness Month was amplified through national and regional media coverage, featuring CDA dermatologists. These efforts helped increase public awareness, position dermatologists as trusted experts, and extend the reach of evidence-based sun safety messaging across Canada.
Supporting members is central to the CDA’s role as the national voice of dermatology in Canada. Through education, communications, professional development, and advocacy we support dermatologists at every stage of their careers.
Our initiatives strengthen connection, learning, and engagement across the profession. Together, they enhance the member experience and support a strong dermatology community.
